Hale Community Centre today (Wednesday 16th February) hosted the first community event in North Farnham embracing the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) a tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
The Queen’s Green Canopy focuses on planting sustainably, by encouraging planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation,
which will benefit future generations.
Today’s event, arranged by Cllr. Catherine Powell, invited local families, supporters and the Community Centre’s staff/volunteers to help plant seventeen fruit trees, supplied by a local charity, on the grassland area outside the Community Centre.
The tree planting project is a joint venture between HMP Send Horticulture Team and The Clink Charity, developing three orchards within Send alongside the outreach project. The outreach project aims to help the local community whilst promoting the significance of biodiversity to society.
Although it was a wet afternoon, everyone got stuck in planting various varieties of eating and cooking apples, plums, cherries and damsons, before retiring to the Community Centre for hot
chocolate and donuts!
Cathy Burroughs, the Centre Manager at the Hale Community Centre and Cllr. Powell thanked everyone for their effort and joined together to say, ‘whilst it will take a while for the trees to become established and produce a good crop of fruit, getting children and young people involved today was brilliant, as they are the ones who will get to see the trees through to maturity!’
Special thanks to VIVID, Farnham Town Council and North Farnham Voice for
their support of the event.
